We live in a semi-free country
The city of Carmel, Indiana recently voted to take property (apartment complex) via eminent domain and then to let the property be developed by a development company. The idea is that the city receives more tax revenue. This comes on the heals of an incredibly stupid supreme court decision a couple of years back that in reality erodes our freedom to own property in America. The idea of eminent domain is to use the police power of the state to take private property for public use. This power when used responsibly is very important. For example, Indiana is working to finish the I69 interstate to Evansville. The state will need to acquire property (at fair market value) for this very important public project. Makes sense right. Taking property in Carmel for private use so the egomaniac mayor can feel good about himself, threatens private property rights in general. Trust me, we don't want to go there. We need some clarification rulings very quickly (from the Supreme Court). Unfortunately, sometimes the Supreme Court isn't...Supreme that is. We need Mel Gibson to come and yell "FREEDOM" before the state further destroys this important freedom.
